Public Transport
In Amsterdam you can do most of your sightseeing on foot, by bike or by boat. Most major sites are located in or near the city centre and within walking distance. When tired of walking or biking, the public transport system is there to take you to all the major attractions. The Public Transport Company is called “GVB” and provides tram-, bus-, ferry- and metro services during the day and evening hours and night busses throughout the late hours of the night and early hours of the morning. Information on prices for different tickets can be obtained at the offices of the GVB, which are located on the square in front of Central Station.
From Amsterdam Central Station you can take a train and travel to see the rest of Holland or travel to another European country. Trains are comfortable and run frequently.
Trams in Amsterdam – run from 6 in the morning till 12.30 midnight. They provide a fast and convenient way to get from one place to the next.
Busses in Amsterdam – Instead of the tram, you can also take the buss for travelling inside Amsterdam as well as for travelling outside of Amsterdam. Busses run frequently.
Taxis in Amsterdam – are expensive.Their ride starts with a basic charge and then continues with a charge per kilometer.
Bikes in Amsterdam – Everybody in Amsterdam rides a bike. It is an easy, cheap, fast and convenient way to get around the city. The special path system for bikes is well developed, so that you can enjoy and exercise at the same time. You can rent bikes at several locations in Amsterdam, a.o. at Central Station.
